A goodwill letter asks a creditor to remove an accurate late payment as a courtesy. It works best after a one-time slip on an account you've kept current since. Tell us what happened and what's changed, and we'll write it. Nothing you type is saved or sent.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to ask for a goodwill adjustment to the late payment reported in [month and year].

[What caused it.] I take responsibility for it.

[What's different now.]

I value this account. I would be grateful if you would consider removing the late payment reported in [month and year] from my credit reports as a gesture of goodwill.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

This is a request for a favor. A creditor doesn't have to remove accurate information, and many won't. It costs nothing to ask.

If the late payment is actually wrong, don't ask for goodwill. Use the creditor dispute letter.

General information, not legal advice. ReliefGuardian isn't a law firm.

When it's worth a try

  • One late payment, or a short stretch, on an otherwise good account
  • A clear reason, like a hospital stay or a move, and proof that you've fixed it (for example, autopay)
  • A charge-off you've since paid

Be realistic

A creditor doesn't have to remove accurate information, and many have policies against it. It costs nothing to ask. If the late payment is wrong, don't ask for goodwill. Use the creditor dispute letter.

Questions people ask

Who should I send it to?

To the creditor's customer service or executive office address. Some people also send it to the credit bureau reporting department, if the creditor lists one.

How long does a late payment stay on my report?

Up to 7 years. Its effect on your score fades over time, especially with on-time payments since.
